Log #4 The 1st Prototype!

Hi There!

This week we made our first prototype, available for experimentation right now, in the game page! I was the one responsible for developing the fishing minigame, in which by hitting a fish, a hit bar minigame would pop up (like most fishing minigames out there). I also did some tweaks to the player controller on land, implementing movement acceleration and the "Coyote Time" technique, used by a lot of platformers such as "Celeste" to make the controls feel more responsive. Controllable jump height was also implemented, done by subtracting half the y velocity speed, if the jump button was released in the middle of a jump. Basic water controls were implemented, but further refinement will be necessary, as the jump to get out of the water is way too high, and some players found the controls to be awkward in the peer review class. I also programmed a simple water shape, for the player to be able to swim, and for the fish entities to swim on, and a simple melee attack, for fighting the enemy prototype.

I'd say this was a nice start, and I am confident that more interesting stuff will be made in the near future!

Bye Bye!

Hey all, Guilherme here!

We finally started our work in the engine, and made our first prototype! I was responsible for the hook and the basic enemy AI, which are featured right now on our itch.io page. The hook is only thrown in a specific direction for now, but we want to make it in a way that the player is free to aim with it in the future. We had a lot of fun in the lab this week, trying out our colleagues' games :) We hope to get a lot of progress done in the upcoming weeks, stay tuned for exciting news! See you next week!

Hi everyone!

This week we developed an initial prototype for our game! We added some basic levels with the main ideias and mechanics that will make part of the game. I was responsible for developing the basic fish AI movement, the box push and the pulling fish, which I did with the help of my colleague Rodrigo.

It was very fun to try out the other students games in the lab, and we got lots of feedback on how to improve upon what we already have. We will need to better fine tune the basic mechanics, such as the hook swing and fishing. With this in mind we want to get a lot of progress done in the next couple of weeks.

See you later alligator!
